King’s Daughters Swing Bed Program
Come Home to Recuperate
Patients who traditionally had to seek long-term care in distant communities can now maintain contact with family, friends, and familiar surroundings through King’s Daughters Hospital’s Swing Bed program.
The term “Swing Bed” refers to a general acute care (hospital) bed which can be “swung” from acute care to long-term care and back again to meet patient needs. It is not a nursing home designation.
When a patient’s condition is no longer considered acute, he can be “swung” to a lower level of medical and nursing supervision called “swing bed.”
Typically, the type of patient who would benefit from this service is one who has been hospitalized and whose condition is improved but is still in need of a few more days or weeks of continuous care to receive physical therapy or other treatments before returning home or, in some cases, to a more supervised situation.
Examples of skills that qualify for swing bed are: physical therapy, IV hydration, speech therapy, complex wound care and post surgical care to name a few.
Upon recommendation from the attending physician, the Admission Committee will meet to discuss if the patient qualifies for swing bed benefits. The committee recommends admission or denial based on the criteria presented. The patient should have reasonable restorative or rehabilitative potential that will respond to services offered.
If being transferred from another hospital, the patient must be accepted by a Physician who has staff privileges at KDH, and the patient must be approved by the Admissions Committee.
